Our Relationship with Failure

In the modern discourse on success, there's a constant narrative around the notion of failure, with many social media gurus proclaiming that "failure is the answer." But that's not the complete picture. As Mick Spiers articulates in episode 238 of The Leadership Project, understanding failure is crucial—but more importantly, leveraging it for higher performance is key.

The Misunderstanding of Failure

Through thorough exploration, Mick reminds us that failure, often romanticised with phrases like "fail fast" and "fail forward," doesn't inherently lead to success. The illusion that repetition of failure magic morphs one into a high achiever is misleading. Instead, the transformative potential of failure lies in our reaction to and relationship with it.

Manifestation: The Missing Piece

Before delving into failure, Mick introduces manifestation as an often neglected aspect that precedes how we deal with setbacks. Through insights gathered from a conversation with Dr. John Demartini, it's clear that manifestation isn't about mere wishful thinking. It's about aligning actions with one's values, consistently visualising success, and putting in a concentrated, focused effort. Failure, therefore, acts as a signal to adjust and move forward rather than a sign to stop.

Reconditioning Views on Failure

Cultural conditioning has taught many of us to fear failure—a lesson absorbed from school, sports, and beyond. However, embracing failure as a necessary teacher is vital. As Mick notes, merely failing isn't educational. It requires analysis and action. He emphasises, "Knowledge without action is useless." The real transformation happens when you not only learn from failure but also apply those insights practically.

Self-Reflection and After-Action Reviews

Reflective practice, Mick asserts, is where high performers distinguish themselves. By regularly engaging in after-action reviews, whether after successes or failures, leaders can isolate variables, make minor adjustments, and ensure continuous improvement. His five daily reflection questions provide a systematic approach to this: What went well? What didn't go well? What would I do differently next time? What did I learn about myself? What did I learn about others?

The Power of Resilience and Letting Go

The closing part of Mick's framework highlights resilience and the pivotal ability to let go. Drawing a parallel to Roger Federer, one of the world's most successful tennis players, Mick illustrates how resilience comes from learning from each point and moving on. Federer’s unmatched ability to let go of setbacks, understand conditions, and adapt is what set him apart.

A Framework for Success

Mick concludes by laying out a comprehensive framework: starting with manifestation, redefining the relationship with failure, committing to learning and applying insights, and finally, nurturing resilience to let go. He challenges his audience to reflect on their failures, extract learning, apply those lessons, and crucially, let them go to avoid being burdened by past errors.

As we navigate life’s ebbs and flows, redefining our relationship with failure can unlock the doors to growth and achievement. Mick’s insights serve as a guiding light in this transformative journey.
