Tony Latimer’s journey into coaching began in 1984 when, as an IT professional, he found himself struggling in a managerial role. His employer, IBM, sent him on a leadership program that, unexpectedly, taught him coaching techniques on a tennis court, despite him not knowing how to play tennis. This transformative experience laid the groundwork for his approach to coaching, emphasizing non-directive coaching—getting individuals to reflect and discover their own solutions, rather than being instructed.

Tony discussed three critical components of effective coaching:


  1. Performance Equals Potential Minus Interference: This formula encapsulates his coaching philosophy. He explains that if someone has achieved something once, they have the potential to do it again. It’s not a matter of questioning their abilities, but rather identifying and removing interferences.

  2. Simplicity in language: Tony insists on the simplicity of communication. His principle is to keep language straightforward and accessible, ensuring that coaching is effective across various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
